Hisarönü, Ovacık or Ölüdeniz: Which Base

This stretch of coast near Fethiye is really three linked settlements rather than one resort. Hisarönü sits up on the hill and carries most of the nightlife and bar-strip energy, especially with a younger crowd in the evenings. Ovacık is the quieter, more residential middle ground that blends into Hisarönü without a clear border. Ölüdeniz itself is the beach town down at sea level, generally more scenic and pricier for accommodation, with a calmer evening scene than Hisarönü.

BaseCharacterBeach?
HisarönüNightlife, bars, restaurants on the hillNo, about 4 km uphill from Ölüdeniz
OvacıkQuieter, residential, merges into HisarönüNo, similar distance to Ölüdeniz
ÖlüdenizBeach town, scenic, pricier, calmer nightsYes, on the sea

None of the three is objectively wrong for a family or couple; it mostly comes down to whether you want to walk out onto sand each morning or trade that for cheaper rooms and easier access to the bar strip. Whichever base you pick, a rental car makes it simple to move between them and start comparing options from our main car rental page.

Where to Rent: Free Hotel Delivery

Standalone rental storefronts actually inside Ölüdeniz or Ovacık are limited to a small cluster of local firms near the Ovacık Shell petrol station junction. The more common arrangement is a Fethiye or Dalaman-based company delivering the car straight to your hotel in Ölüdeniz, Ovacık or Hisarönü, then collecting it from the same spot at the end of your stay.

Local desks vs. delivery firms

  • A handful of small operators sit near the Ovacık Shell junction with walk-in counters
  • Fethiye-based firms typically deliver at no extra charge to hotels across Ölüdeniz, Ovacık and Hisarönü
  • Dalaman Airport suppliers can also arrange drop-off here, useful if you didn't rent on arrival

Free delivery to your hotel is the norm on this coast, not a premium add-on, so there's rarely a need to search out a physical office in Ölüdeniz itself.

If you're flying in and want to weigh airport pickup against hotel delivery, our Dalaman Airport to Hisarönü guide walks through both routes and what to expect at the terminal.

Driving to the Blue Lagoon and Parking

The drive down from Hisarönü to Ölüdeniz is short but steep, dropping roughly 4 km in elevation with a series of bends before leveling out at the coast. Belcekız, the open public beach, is free to use. The adjoining Kumburnu / Blue Lagoon Nature Park is a protected area and charges separately: a per-person walk-in fee plus a per-car fee that covers all passengers and parking.

WhereFee as of mid-2026Notes
Belcekız public beachFreeOpen beach, no nature-park charge
Kumburnu / Blue Lagoon walk-inAround 150 TL per personConfirm at the gate, prices move often
Kumburnu / Blue Lagoon by carAround 800 TL per carCovers all passengers plus parking

A workable way to trim the cost is to park for free near Ölüdeniz Mosque and walk in, roughly 15 minutes, paying only the pedestrian fee at the gate rather than the car fee. In July and August the Blue Lagoon car park regularly fills by around 09:30-10:00, so arriving early matters more than which entrance you use. Our Hisarönü driving tips guide covers the descent itself in more detail, including the bends drivers find trickiest.

Reaching Kabak, Faralya and Kayaköy

The dolmuş minibus network handles Ölüdeniz, Fethiye and Kayaköy well, running roughly every 10-15 minutes through summer until around 01:00. It thins out considerably once you head further south toward Faralya and Kabak, which is where having your own car starts to pay off, particularly for early starts before the day-trip crowds arrive.

  • Kayaköy, about 7 km from Hisarönü: sealed but winding road, manageable in a small car; entry to the abandoned village runs around 100-120 TL, or free with a Müzekart
  • Faralya, further south along the coast road: paved but narrow and cliff-edged, best driven without rushing
  • Kabak: a standard car reaches the upper village car park; the final steep track down to the beach is best left to the local 4x4 shuttle or walked, since driving it typically voids rental insurance

Butterfly Valley is worth a specific mention: the clifftop viewpoint near Faralya is drivable and has a roadside lay-by, but the valley floor itself has no road access at all and is reached only by boat or water taxi from Ölüdeniz. The scramble route down from Faralya is considered dangerous and best avoided. For a wider spread of ideas beyond these three, see our best day trips from Hisarönü roundup.

Paragliding and Beach Days

Paragliding off Babadağ, which summits at roughly 1,969 m, is one of the signature things to do here, and you won't be driving yourself up the mountain for it. Operators run their own jeep transfers from hotels in Hisarönü, Ovacık and Ölüdeniz up to the launch point, with landings back down on Belcekız beach. Keep clear of the marked landing strip if you're on the sand when paragliders are coming in.

A note on safety

Paragliding carries a real risk of serious injury, as UK travel guidance has pointed out, so it's worth booking through a licensed operator rather than the cheapest tout on the beach and asking about their safety record before you fly.

A rental car and a paragliding booking rarely overlap: the flight transfer is handled by the operator, so plan the car around your beach and day-trip days instead.

On days when you're skipping the jeep transfer altogether, a rental car mainly earns its keep for beating the crowds to the Blue Lagoon car park or reaching Kabak and Faralya before the dolmuş schedule catches up. If that fits your plans, you can Compare rental cars to see current options for the dates you need.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there car rental offices in Ölüdeniz?
A few small local firms operate near the Ovacık Shell petrol junction, but most visitors instead book with a Fethiye or Dalaman-based company that delivers the car free to their hotel in Ölüdeniz, Ovacık or Hisarönü.
How much is it to take a car into the Blue Lagoon?
As of mid-2026, driving into the Kumburnu / Blue Lagoon Nature Park runs around 800 TL per car, covering all passengers and parking, though prices move often, so confirm at the gate. Walking in from a free parking spot near Ölüdeniz Mosque and paying only the roughly 150 TL pedestrian fee is a cheaper alternative.
Can I drive down to Kabak beach?
A standard rental car can reach the upper Kabak village car park, but the final steep track down to the beach itself is best left to the local 4x4 shuttle or covered on foot, since driving that section typically voids your rental insurance.
Do I need a car if I stay in Ölüdeniz?
Not strictly for the basics: the dolmuş covers Ölüdeniz, Fethiye and Kayaköy frequently and runs late into the night in summer. A car becomes more useful once you want to reach Kabak or Faralya early, avoid the thinning bus schedule further south, or beat the Blue Lagoon car park filling up by mid-morning.
Do I drive myself up Babadağ for paragliding?
No. Paragliding operators run their own jeep transfers from hotels in Hisarönü, Ovacık and Ölüdeniz up to the launch point on Babadağ, with landings back on Belcekız beach, so a rental car isn't part of that part of the day.
